Abstract
      Intertidal fish assemblages were investigated on two different spatial scales, local and regional.  In this presentation, I shall deal with issues related to community organization and coexistence based on the results of two following works. 
(1) Analysis of spatial niche utilisation
      Patterns of habitat-wide space utilisation were examined in coexisting gobies through a mesocosm experiment that mimicked the intertidal environment with a set of tidepools.  Three species (Bathygobius fuscus, Chaenogobius annularis and C. gulosus) showed variable patterns of space use and growth, which also depended on paired species.  Null models derived from the experimental data were effective in assessing the intra- and inter-specific interactions among the three species. 
(2) Latitudinal patterns in tidepool fish community  structure
      Latitudinal patterns of tidepool fish assemblages were explored through an intensive field work conducted on 55 shore sites spread across ca. 1000 km north-south in south-western Japan.  Numbers of taxa and individuals per unit area tended to increase towards lower latitudes.  In contrast, biomass (total fish wet weight) per unit area showed no change with latitude.  Median fish body size tended to be small towards lower latitudes.  These results suggest the phenomenon of "biomass compensation", whereby body size and abundance/diversity change in opposite directions with latitude.
