活動備忘 Event Memo：
This talk examines the cultural and territorial politics of the rapid growth in tourism from China to Taiwan after 2008. What is the impact of the so-called “陸客” (Mainland Chinese tourist) on Taiwanese society, on China-Taiwan relations, and on cultural and geopolitical spaces and imaginaries on both sides of the Taiwan Strait?
Drawing from theoretical threads in political and cultural geography, anthropology, sociology, and critical tourism studies, I present an argument that tourism should be viewed as a technology of state territorialization; that is, as a mode of social and spatial ordering that produces tourists and state territory as inherently unstable effects of power.
Based on interviews and ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Taiwan and China between 2012 and 2015, I explore the engagement of Chinese tourists with Taiwanese hosts, political representations of Taiwan and China, the territorializing effects of tourism, and the production of multiple and contradictory sensations of stateness within Taiwan.
I conclude that tourism has aggravated contradictions between the different territorial programs of China and Taiwan, in terms of guest and host interactions, and also in wider arenas of politics and policy making.
